What does CSA-R designation mean? Virtually all appraisers have state licenses.  But that tells you no more about an appraiser's ability and integrity than a drivers license tells you about a driver's skill.   Fortunately, you don't have to road test an appraiser to determine his or her professionalism. You can look for a CSA designation from the Columbia Society of Real Estate Appraisers, a 60-year old New York State organization which offers training modules and continuing education seminars.

Professional designations tell you the appraiser has gained experience, up-to-date training and critical judgment over many years - sometimes decades.  That experience encompasses a myriad of property types and property markets, up and down real estate cycles, changes in neighborhoods and shifts in lender's risk appetites.
